Setting Up Mats and Training In A Basement
Yesterday started bright and early at 545am! I had to wake up and get things ready to head to my 7am coaching session. We got to work on some new things yesterday. We spent time working on lateral movement and becoming more explosive laterally.
We went through her dynamic warm up and then went into some resistance band work including monster walks and fast feet out and ups. Then we moved into single leg lateral broad jumps into landing on two feet. Then we did lateral skater jumps with increasing distance, a second hold, and jump back the opposite direction. This was a good way to challenge her and increase her capabilities as lateral movement and efficiency is crucial for soccer players. Especially when you start talking about lateral rolling starts.
This was the focus on the first half of the session and then we switched gears to focus on some top speed mechanics drills. We spent a lot of time going over proper form for the A Drill and B Drill. These are designed to break down the top speed cycle into focused parts. The A Drill focuses on the high knee drive and the B Drill focuses on the step over and reach of the front leg and active pull back.
We finished up the session doing kettlebell sumo deadlifts. I didn’t have access to a trap bar which is what I love to use for my athletes to do deadlifts with. So we made the kettlebell work for the day. I had her start by doing a bunch of bodyweight reps just to make some minor corrections that needed to happen before I had her pick up the weight. She did very well with the weight and we did 5 sets of 5 repetitions. That took us to the end of the session and it was a very productive one and both sides were happy with the work done.
Next on the agenda I had to run straight home to grab my Gi and take Champ out really quickly because I had to run over to the storage unit to meet a couple of the guys to load our mats into their trucks. From there we went straight over to another teammates house to set up in his basement. He cleared out the furniture and we had plenty of space to roll and have practice on. We were able to have 4 matches going on at the same time which is pretty awesome for being in a basement! This is just another example of how awesome the guys on this team are and how thankful we are to have the opportunity to train with them. Always willing to help and open up their time and resources to help us grow and get better.
From there I had to come straight home and get set up for my second fantasy football draft of the year. This one was with a bunch of my friends from my hometown. Since I am still here in Denver I had to do the draft online via zoom as did a couple of my other friends. It’s always a lot of fun to see them and get to talk with them. It took about 3 hours all together and we all had a lot of fun during the draft. It’s my favorite time of the year, football is starting and drafting fantasy teams is one of my favorite things to do!
Then in the evening I met a couple of my friends for dinner at one of our favorite spots, Cranellis. It’s an Italian restaurant and their food is delicious and it’s always great quality. It was really good to spend time with them as I haven’t seen them for a couple of months so we got to catch up on everything we have missed over that time. They had recently finished their deck on the top of their house and put a fire pit in so we headed over there for a couple of beers and enjoy the great weather we had all night.
After the long day it was finally time to go home and get some sleep. Just another long day doing what I love with the people I love. It doesn’t get better than that!
